In my professional career, I have been involved with many product development activities in different verticals from developing mission critical flight software for the International Space Station, to providing wireless telecommunication technologies, or Software as a Service for multi-channel marketing. I can say without any doubts that none of these projects that I have been part of failed or succeeded because of the technology choices, or technology issues, or infrastructure or platform related issues. They also did not fail or succeed only because of A players or lack of having all the right players. They failed solely because of human related or impacted issues such as prioritization, decision making, inspiration, motivation, culture, and overall company energy issues. All these equate to “Leadership.”

I do believe that by addressing leadership issues in software companies, the industry will elevate itself and the path to innovation will increase dramatically reducing number of failed projects and value propositions and increase them exponentially.

Offshore Strategies

Setting up an offshore development and test center is not an easy task, and majority of these centers end up failing, because they are not well thought out. There are many elements in establishing offshore centers, some of which are: Availability of skill sets, cultural issues, geographical issues, logistical issues, economy issues, political issues, project communication issues, and loyalty issues.

We have setup such centers in different parts of the world since 2005. Some succeeded and some failed, and as a result we have learned plenty about our approaches. Off shoring can be a disaster if not done right, but it could also mean your competitive edge against others if done right. We can do it right.

We usually suggest that a core team be in charge of the architecture and User Interface design elements for these projects, but all design, development, testing, and documentation should be done offshore.
